Dragon Ball GT
1996-1997
This series has polarized reviews, and there's tons of reasons why. My goal was to figure out my own opinion. And I ended up with a mixed one.
Positive things: lots of OG Dragonball references! I also liked the music; the opening is one of my favorites. SSJ4 is also one of my favorite designs; in regards to its use, there was room for improvement. There are some good takeaways (SSJ4 Gogeta, Goku's love for Pan, etc.).
Negatives: the writing and art design. Some of the episodes are boring. The storytelling doesn't compare to anything in DBZ (god bless the Cell saga). And it either feels like nothing happens, or everything happens fast without consequences. And in terms of design, I didn't like a lot of the villains and character looks.
And oh boy, the ending...
I get that it was meant to immortalize Goku, but there was no efficient build-up to it! Just like other events in GT, they're a potentially good idea (consequences of using the dragon balls, Saiyans and Tsufruians, an SSJ form that derives from the Great Ape, etc.), but the execution was off. Instead of feeling satisfied with this being a potential end to Dragon Ball, I was left frustrated.
GT was interesting to watch. But I'm glad it wasn't the canonical end to my favorite franchise.
