The Wolf Among Us
When I got my first laptop, the first game I downloaded was The Wolf Among Us.
I downloaded the game. Opened it. And I was instantly hooked on the main menu.
I love The Wolf Among Us.
So I was brimming with excitement when I heard a sequel was in the works. They released a teaser in 2019. Then, a trailer in 2022. Was the Wolf back?
But after that, only crickets.
What’s so good about this game? After all, the gameplay is just the Telltale formula; a bunch of dialogue options to choose the story trajectory, and QTE sequences for action (with glitches in the programming). It’s not the most exciting in terms of gameplay, but the story is so high-quality that it more than makes up for that.
Enter a world of fairy tale characters stuck in the harsh conditions of NYC in the 1980s. With the loss of their fictional homeworld, this community engages in real-world debts, prostitution, and crime.
You are the sheriff of this town, the Big Bad Wolf, now known as Bigby. He’s a grumpy chain-smoking man holding back his temper to avoid turning into a monster. Because of his violent past, people are scared and hostile towards him, even though Bigby wants to move past his history and be part of the community. And as much as people don’t believe it, Bigby actually cares about the people. Especially his work partner, Snow White.
I love Bigby as a character. I love the other characters and the attention to detail over their looks and mannerisms. I love the atmosphere and set pieces. I love the music and ambience of the cruel urban city. I love the story of a lone wolf figuring out his place in a world that doesn’t want him.
I hope the sequel comes out. And if it does, I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
